THE COUNTRY - SPAINThe former mayor of New York travels to Lima to see first hand the situation of criminality
AGENCIES policy during his tenure with "iron fist", today visited several police stations in Lima and other parts of the city, to make an assessment of the situation.
Giuliani, who said he was surprised "a lot" by public perception of insecurity in Peru, said that programs to reduce crime rates should adjust to the reality of each place. "Before making recommendations, it is necessary to know the people of the city, because no single method can serve all the cities," said an international consultant.
Giuliani gained much popularity by the fortitude shown after the attacks of September 11, 2001 , but has been criticized for the frequent violations of civil rights by the NYPD in pursuit of criminals.
The news has generated considerable media attention which could favor the candidate who is currently ahead in the polls over his rival, nationalist Ollanta Humala
, in order to runoff on June 5. recent survey by the firm CPI, released last weekend shows that the conservative candidate would get 52.9% of the vote while Humala 47.1% achieved.
